NEW PADDLE (1995)
A new model paddle has been added to the RESCUE ALIVE. The paddle provides a sturdy shaft that extends to the base of the paddle blade to ensure rigidity when using the ice spike. The spike has been redesigned to extend from the side of the blade instead of the bottom. This change reduces the "flex" the paddle experiences when pulling the RESCUE ALIVE across thin ice. Keep in mind, in normal use and in training, that the paddle should not be raised above the rescuer’s waist when planting the spike into the ice. Slamming the pick into the ice breaks the ice away, reducing the grabbing effectiveness.

LONGER HARNESS (1996)
The Victim Harness has been extended to 52 inches. This increased length allows rescuers to secure large victims with heavy winter clothing within the harness. Velcro has been added to both sides of the harness to increase the ease of securing the two ends.

NEW PLUNGER HOUSINGS (1998)
This improvement involves the plungers that allow the guardrails to fold down for compact storage. The original design requires the user to place his thumbs in a position that could potentially pinch the thumb between the plunger and the hinge. The new design involves a large tab on the back of the plunger housing. The user pushes the tab back (which is toward the center of the unit) and the plunger slides into the housing, The fingers stay away from the hinge and the potential pinching.

A retrofit plunger kit is available to your department if you believe the thumb pinching risk needs to be eliminated. A complete kit is available for your RESCUE ALIVE for $380. This includes the following:

  1. Four new plungers, housings and springs.
  2. Additional screws for securing the PVC cross bar protector.
  3. Complete instructions for the change over.

NEW GUARDRAILS (1999)
The RESCUE ALIVE guardrails have been modified to use Schedule 80 PVC material, which is grey in color, instead of the Schedule 40 rails that are white. The increase in the rail thickness requires changes in the diameter of the aluminum rail mounts. Retrofit kits are available for purchase. Call 800-325-4832 for additional details.
